Below is a list of things which you need to avoid carrying out in order to avert a disaster happening while using Windows operating system.

  • First and foremost is — don’t turn off the system directly by using the power ON/OFF switch. Always use Windows Start > “Shut Down” and switch off the main power when you see the “It’s now safe to turn off your Computer” message on your monitor.
  • Do not connect or remove peripherals such as Printer / Mouse / PCI cards etc when the computer is running. Always do this before you boot the computer.
  • Do not delete unknown files usually present in Document & Settings, Windows or system folder in your Hard Disk.
  • Do not change the BIOS settings without having prior knowledge.
  • Don’t change the Display properties without any prior knowledge.
  • Don’t keep floppy / CD / DVD media in the respective drives when not in use. Always remove them before you give the command to shut down your computer.
  • Do not unplug Pen Drives, USB Drives etc., suddenly. To safely remove these removable USB media, right click on the “Safely Remove Hardware” icon on taskbar and click on “Safely Remove Hardware”. Select the removable media and click on the “Stop” button. A ‘Stop the Hardware’ window will be displayed. Now click on the “Ok” button. You will get message saying that you can safely remove the media.
  • Do not use unknown floppies, pen drives, USB drives. As these may contain virus, they could end up infecting your computer and removing them could prove to be a daunting task.
  • Do not move the system around when it is running. Always switch off the system before you start such tasks.
  • Do not attempt to service the equipment yourself unless you have prior experience as unknowingly touching or tampering with the insides could lead to costly repairs.

If you follow these pointers, you can run your computer rather efficiently without encountering any hiccups along the way.
